The idea of a cooperation platform between Central and Eastern European Countries
(CEEC) and China – shortly referred to as 16+1 – was conceived after the first
China–Central and Eastern European Countries Economic and Trade Forum that was
held in 2011 in Budapest. Members of the format include China, 11 EU Member States:
Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland,
Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia; and 5 non-EU countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina,
Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia.
Participating countries aim to invigorate and
expand their cooperation on a wide range of areas, including but not limited to trade and
investment, connectivity, finance, agriculture, science and technology, health, education,
culture, people-to- people relations and local connections. In order to facilitate
cooperation and exchange, various mechanisms and institutions have been established,
gradually enhancing the 16+1 framework. Members seek to build a lasting partnership
on the principles of openness, inclusiveness and mutual benefit.
Deepening economic, trade and financial cooperation for win-win development
This year, on the fifth anniversary of the formation of 16+1 cooperation, its highest
forum, the China-CEEC Summit of Heads of Government will be held in Budapest,
Hungary on November 27, 2017, chaired by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
Hungary is a country at the heart of Europe with a rich history of more than one thousand years. Since the foundation of the Hungarian state (in 1000/1001 AD), Hungary has always played a significant role in the region, as well as in the whole of Europe. In the last 20 years, Hungary has become an attractive target for investors and numerous major international companies have established their regional centres in here.
Hungary is located in East-Central Europe and it occupies an area of 93 022 km 2 . Hungary borders with Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia. Hungary is a member of OECD, NATO, EU and the Schengen Zone. The official language is Hungarian and the currency is the Hungarian Forint (HUF).
Throughout the world Hungary is known for her extensive list of Nobel laureates, Rubik’s Cube (also known as the Magic Cube) or her delicious cuisine. While not large in terms of population (less than 10 million inhabitants) Hungary has a wealth of culture and history, complemented by a language so completely different from its neighbours.
Hungary is landlocked like its neighbours Austria, Slovakia and Serbia though it still deserves the nickname "land of waters", as it holds the largest lake in Europe (Lake Balaton) and is crossed by mighty rivers which divide and define its regions. As well as water to cool off in, Hungary can be the perfect place to keep warm, as it is located over a very active geo-thermic area and has over a thousand thermal water springs.
